Remote Learning

Castle Rock Middle School, along with all Douglas County School Districts Schools, will go to a remote learning environment beginning Monday, November 30.  This decision requires changes to how students access their learning.  CRMS staff and teachers are working to provide the best education for your kids.

Please know that students will not have cohorts during remote learning.

This communication will provide a new schedule and daily expectations.  You can expect the same routine and procedures from each teacher because we understand the importance of consistency for success.

Friday schedule WILL NOT change.  Friday's schedule will remain as it has been all year. Students attend each of their classes for 30 minutes on Friday morning from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Students will be logging in to live classes every day.  They will access their learning through their Google Accounts and join the teacher and classmates in a live session using Google Meets. Students will have virtual, real-time contact with a teacher every class period.

Although the class periods are 85 minutes, we want to be aware of the amount of time kids will spend in front of a screen. Students will be expected to log in at the start of each class period.  Once logged in, they will be in that class for around 30 minutes for instruction and direct interaction with their teacher and fellow students. For example:

An 85 minute block class:

  • First 30 minutes:

    • Attendance taken

    • Instruction of class

    • Interaction with peers in class

    • Classroom discussion

    • Assignment given and opportunity to ask clarifying questions

  • Remainder of class

    • Student work time on assignments and activities

    • Students interacting with each for small group work

    • Teacher working with students in small groups or individually

    • Teacher available via email to answer questions

This structure allows for direct instruction and interaction with their teacher, and it allows work time for assignments and projects.  It also gives consistent times for students to be online and join a class.

The expectation for attendance, grading, and behavior will be the same as when we are in school.  Attendance will be taken at the start of each class just like during school.  Teachers will also be giving assignment, feedback, and grading as usual.  We will give a 1st-semester grade on Thursday, December 17, 2020, after 3:00 pm.

Students should have the necessary technology to be able to access their learning these next three weeks. If there are any issues with your student’s technology, please contact Yvonne Miller, [email protected],  to have them addressed this week prior to moving to remote learning.

Throughout the next few days, teachers will give instructions and procedures for how remote learning will look between November 30th to December 17th.  All students will have the necessary codes to access the learning.

Please note: December 18th is a furlough day for our school district.  Teachers and staff will not be grading or responding to phone calls and emails that day.

CRMS students and staff are extremely proud of the Castle Rock community for their continued support through the 2020-2021 school year.  Please know that we are truly blessed to be a part of your child's education, and we will work to make the best of a difficult situation.
